Here's a writing exercise we did in my Performance Poetry Class a while back.
We had to create a poem out of questions.
I just wrote a string of poetic questions that have nothing to do with each other.
Why does she give birth to more children than sonnets?
When did we become more like ants than gorillas?
Why do we enslave ink in our pens and then put them on the auction block of paper?
Why are our heads filled with brains instead of hearts?
Why must I walk in your shoes to know your story wouldn't it be better to walk in your skin?
Why does it matter how many colors are in the rainbow when we don't appreciate them equally anyway?
How many poets does it take to screw in a light bulb? None because they're too busy writing about its former luminescence.

Free Write (hopped up on caffeine)
I'm just letting these words flow through me like
energy
like extensions
of myself
leaking through my fingers on to solid keys
transcribed onto bright white screen
laying on the cyber page
so serene
thick like cream
can you taste me yet
let me feed you visually
watch my words slither down the screen
watch them like a body
from the head to the feet
can you feel me
I am seeping into you
my words go right through you like.......

LIVE FREE WRITE
Right now I'm just gonna blog a free write (10 bars) based on the last thing I see on twitter lol. NO EDITING, NO BS Here it goes:
necolebitchie:
im flipping through the channels and they have a whole segment dedicated to Gabby Sidibe weight smh...
Are you intimidated by her roles or her rolls
Just cuz your skinny butt can't act and you're wack
Gabby is taking it to new levels while you're stuck on the same one
Why are you hating on your fellow colored woman
I love it when an intelligent black woman is on my TV screen
So what's up with the attitude? what do you mean...
smh? shaking your head?
You should be clapping instead
Really surprised at you necolebitchie
I guess this is why Gabby's way more richie
LMAO... I am so corny

My Crow, Soft Word
you were my favorite
grammatical error
no matter how much I tried to fix you, you just kept
popping
up
on my page as incorrect
I kept typing you in over and over in different orders
and you still came up in Spell Check
I gave my all.
Placing my brackets around places I never put them before
Inserting your comma within my quotation marks
Entering and back spacing
entering and back spacing
ENTER
BACK
SPACE
SPACE, TAB, SHIFT, SHIFT, ALT,
CONTROL
RETURN
until my fingers hurt
My friends said, "This is a fragment, consider revising"
But I begged to differ
I was determined to mold you into the perfect phrase
I tried everything that i could yet
you still had that little green squiggly line dwelling underneath you
you really began to piss me off
you were the one thing ruining my life's masterpiece
so i decided maybe my memoir was better off with out you
and miraculously
all my problems were over once i hit that button.
DELETE.

I know ... I know... I been gone for minute. but.... I'm back.
To get some inspiration this week or this weekend. Try going to a poetry reading, a slam or a poetry lounge. For events checks out either this blog during the week or search online for a nice spot.
I live near NY so here are a couple of links to spots that I like know of:

By the way, if you're in New Brunswick. I will be performing at the Bi- Annual Jazz n Java Poetry Open Mic this Friday at 8:00 pm in the Douglass Campus Center. Come out and show love for some great poets. =)

Found something really cool today and something not so cool....
I found this really cool site today. I secretly really like fashion, even though I don't always dress like it. But anyway, i found a new stress reliever...... www.polvore.com
This site is hot... you can make looks or sets (as the call them) using clothing from almost anywhere and create a spread like you would see it in a magazine! And then you can enter it in whatever contest they have going on.
Today I entered this contest for V.V. Brown. First prize is: "A $500 gift certificate to Steve Madden, autographed poster, autographed poster, a ‘Travelling Like the Light’ CD and limited edition 7” vinyl featuring the Little Boots Remix of “LEAVE!” and Andrew Weatherall Mix of “Crying Blood” and a personal shout-out on V.V.’s Twitter."
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!
go ENTER now!!!
Also, today I discovered Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs ONLINE grrrr..... after just purchasing it in the bookstore. I hope I can still return it (crossing fingers)
I can't wait to read it though!
btw... it's for my 19th Century Black Literature Course which I'm loving so far.

MCATs and ish
THIS
I have been M.I.A once again because I have been vigorously studying for the MCAT. But now I am back at school and must begin the process of learning how to handle both effectively. I'm really excited about my classes though.... Systems Physiology, 19th Century Black Lit, Creative Writing and Orgo Lab....think i can handle it???
Anyway I've decided that no matter what I will post a weekly inspiration piece/excerpt from either one of my poems are someone elses every Tuesday.
Weekly Inspiration:
Why do I still feel enslaved?
Like there are mental shackles wrapped around my brain.
And on every application where I see African hyphen American slash Black
Why do the words resemble a chain?
Pulling me back to the: you don’t belong here.
Reiterating that I’m just a former slave
I’m just a visitor chilling on the streets paved over my ancestor’s graves
Slavery can’t possibly be over.
Because the white man has always been massa to me
I begged to get a perm when my hair was too peasy
Now I cover up my naps with a full blown weave

FREEDOM!!
Finally out of school and what happens!!! yes....blizzard. I went outside and it was crazy!! I have this belief that snow is actually God shitting on us... and rain is him pissing on us...I can debate my theory all day...lmao
Anyway....It was the perfect day to look at some of my old poetry and to announce that I made a youtube channel, didn't put anything up yet but....its coming!
My tongue gently but painfully brushes against the stitches that hold my gums hostage
as my hand surveys the swelling that has encompassed my face
And i feel trapped with in the wounds of my decision
My decision to let him lay me down and take from me what did not belong to him
to let him put his tools into my mouth and uproot the parts of me that laid within
He said this is what's best for you now
He said "you'll thank me in the future"He had me laughing with his gas and
I felt numb and tingling from my toes to my thumbs
But now I sit here and in disbelief that extracting my impacted wisdom teeth
was a wise choice.....

Music You Can Study To
I know a lot of people can't study and listen to music at the same time. But then again there are people, like me, who love listening to music when they work. The 10 albums getting blown up on my iTunes the most are ( in no particular order):
(i have more than five but) my fav. five: A Night Off (ft. Lloyd), Brand New, Successful (ft. Trey Songz & Lil Wayne), Houstatlantavegas, The Calm, Bria's Interlude (feat. Omarion)
my fav. five: Bipolar, So Good, Are We In This Together, Don't Fight The Feeling, Since You've Been Gone
3. Beyonce -I Am Sasha Fierce (my wife in my head....i'm straight btw...and available ;-) )
my fav. five: Broken-Hearted Girl, Diva, Video Phone, Ego, Scared of Lonely
4. Jamie Foxx - Intuition (I must say this IS the most played album on my iTunes)
my fav. five: Overdose, Number One (ft. Lil' Wayne), Weekend Lover, Freak'in Me (ft. Marsha Ambrosius from Floetry my other girl crush), Slow
5. Jeremih (my boyfriend in my head and I love the entire album which is rare)
my fav. five: That Body, Raindrops, Jumpin', Imma Star, Starting All Over
my fav. five: Thinking Of You, Mannequin, Lost, Still Breathing, Waking Up In Vegas
my fav. five: Slow Dance, Where Did He Go, Make Love, Energy, Knock You Down
my fave five: Lions, Tigers & Bears, Need U Bad, After the Hurricane, Call Me Guilty, Bust Your Windows
9. Jay-Z Grey Album (sorry not on iTunes) & Black Album
my fav. five: My 1st Song, Dirt Off Your Shoulders, 99 Problems, Change Clothes, Moment of Clarity
10. M.I.A. - Kala
my fav. five: World Town, XR2, The Turn, Bamboo Banga, Come Around
ALL ALBUMS ARE LINKED STRAIGHT TO THE iTUNES DOWNLOAD!!
You'll notice I have a lot of "freak um' songs" on here, that's just me. If you don't like those then..... But I have a lot of other types on here that aren't like that.
Also, keep in mind, these are not necessarily the songs out right now that I like, these are just songs that play on my computer almost religiously (lyrics fully memorized and all that). Perhaps I'll have another blog post on the songs I like out right now (the ones that play religiously on the radio).
ENJOY! AND HAPPY STUDYING!!!

Book of the Week
Complications by Atul Gwande
If you're interested in non-fiction and medicine or just great writing in general....this is a great read.
It's about the journey of a surgeon as he realizes medicine is an imperfect science.

Events, Events, Events!! and Randomness
So first....I have an event to tell you guys about!
It is going down!!!
Where? The Key Club
58 Park Place
Newark, NJ
When? Thursday, December 10, 2009
Say What?!!! Some of the best spoken word you'll ever here in your life.
How much? only 10 bucks for a mind blowing evening of poetry and other special performances
Donations will be going to the free Thomas Fund so that's a plus.
Honestly, Thomas is one of the coolest people I know. Someone who would help out anyone in need, give great advice and mentor who ever came his way. Nobody's perfect but if you knew Thomas, jail and him do not fit in the same sentence. So come out and help out a young artist in need because trust me, if he knew you he would do the same for you.
More info on slamglobal.org click the "FREE THOMAS" link
On another note....
I need a nice player for this site...I want to git it poppin on my page without havin freakin "imeem" messing up all the time. So, if you have any ideas and/or suggestions lemme me know.
Here's a few lines from "french music"
you dont have to speak my language for me to understand you
the dark pools in your eyes hold enough ink for me to draw your emotions
curly swirls of confusion drift down your face like roller coasters
bending and twisting around your newly formed wrinkles
i can read the disappointment in your nose crinkles
i can write a novel on the resonance of your cries alone
holding out-of-phase tones
unknown
but bold "Come back here!" you scream in your native tongue
i can see the way you punish yourself with every blink
thick wet lashes against your upper cheeks....
-By Me duh!! lol
(wanna hear the whole thing? let me know)
